I was born in 1994 and I love it. I'm right at the millennial age where I'm old enough to remember the '90s, while growing up in the transformative stage where hip-hop went from the Tootsee Roll to Crank Dat. I was 11 years old when I started comparing my body to others. I was, as my mom would say "straight up and down" - tall, skinny and steady growing. Although I had insecurities about my size, I learned through my teen years to accept it and wore clothes that didn't make me look so lanky. I would wear loose-fitting clothes and avoid skirts and shorts so no one would see my legs.
When I got to college, this got harder. Walking on campus in jeans? Not always comfortable in 80 degree weather. Dancing at parties? I could barely move. Not to mention, my outfits weren't as cute. Gaining weight from my teen years to early adulthood was also difficult because of my busy, active lifestyle. I would take my meals on the go, cheer or march in the band after school, and I walked everywhere on campus,
Post-grad has afforded me the lifestyle of finally putting on weight- from 116 to 131 in 4 months. This is how I did it:
-I ate consistently.
In school, I would either skip breakfast or lunch, and then eat terribly for dinner, Fries, chips, etc. I would eat veggies of course, but it wasn't adding up to the calories I needed. Now, I eat 4 meals a day with one snack, or 3 meals a day with 2 snacks. My favorite meals and snacks are:
Breakfast- Mango banana smoothie
Lunch- Ensure shake
Lunch 2- BLT sandwich, carrots and kettle chips
Snack- Almonds and raisins
Snack 2- Peanut butter and crackers
Dinner- Baked salmon, spinach and white rice
-I focus on strength workouts and less cardio.
I still take walks and do march steps to get cardio in once a week, but I do yoga and pilates to build strength and muscle. This ensures that I'm not burning too many of the calories I consume daily. I workout from Monday to Thursday for 30 minutes a day, and I sometimes do 30-day yoga challenges. I follow Yoga with Adriene on YouTube for all of my practices.
-I did it for myself and no one else.
Stressing over body image can cause unhealthy weight loss or weight gain. I would get stressed and eat chips and cookies for dinner. I would also only try to gain weight because I wanted people to stop pointing out things about my body every 5 minutes. Although the comments are still annoying/hurtful, I've learned to stand up for myself and love myself exactly as I am.
